Shawnee Soapmaker Workshops & Classes

About our Workshops & Classes

Workshops and classes are held onsite in my open soap kitchen at my shop in Little Canada.

I can accomodate 4-6 people. There must be a minimum of 4 people in order to hold a workshop or class. If none of the scheduled dates work for you, get some friends together and set your own date! Or, I can put your name on a waiting list. When enough people are interested, I will open another date.

At each class, you will receive a folder of resources, including a handout of additional recipes so you can make more at home.

There is a brief "introduction to aromatherapy" presentation given at each class. Learn how essential oils can help you.

Soapmaking & Body Care Classes

About our Classes

Control what goes in your soap and body care. Make it yourself. (And save money too!) I have been making soap since 2001. It started out as a hobby. Within a year, it became an internet business. In January 2008, I opened my retail shop in Little Canada.

Since I taught English classes at the college level for many years, it was only natural to fall into sharing my passion for soapmaking by teaching these classes. Due to the large demand, I also sell soapmaking supplies.

Natural Soapmaking

Learn the basics (and beyond!) of natural soapmaking. This is the old-fashioned lye method, also known as CP (cold process). You will learn by participating in making your own 1.5 lb. batch of soap to take home. (This batch will take 3-4 weeks to set.) We will be using a 19th century soap recipe. Add herbs/botanicals to your soap if you wish. Some will be provided. Learn how to color your soap naturally.

Participants must bring a stainless steel pot (a stock pot works well) or a glass pot for stovetop use, a stainless steel spoon, and 2 old towels for insulating your soap mold. (Molds are included.) Please Note: aluminum pots and spoons are not usable because the aluminum reacts with the lye.

This is a 2.5 to 3 hour class.

Class dates:
FREE DEMONSTRATION Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. (I can accomodate 10-12 people for this demonstration.)
Saturday, Jan. 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Thursday, March 12 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Fee: $45 per person + tax

Glycerin Soapmaking

Learn the "melt and pour" soapmaking method! You will produce approx. 1.5 lb.s of glycerin soap. Assorted molds and fragrances will be available. You will get to keep the mold you use. You will also learn how to embed other soaps inside and add botanicals. You will also learn how to make Goldfish-in-a-Bag soap. All supplies are included.

Please bring a glass pot or bowl (preferably with a spout) for microwave use, a mixing spoon, and a plastic bag to transport your soap home.

This is a 2 hour class.

Class dates:
Saturday, Jan. 10 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday, March 7 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Fee: $30 per person + tax

Natural Body Care

This easy process teaches you how to make your own natural lip balms, lotions, bath bombs, and bath salts. In this class, you will make approx. 8 oz. of lotion, 5 tubes of lip balm, 5-6 bath bombs, and 18 oz. bath salts. Bottles, tubes, and packaging are all included.

Please bring a large glass mixing bowl, a glass measuring cup for microwave use, a small pot (1-2 C.) for stovetop use, and two cookie sheeets or large trays.

This is a 2 hour class.

Class dates:
Thursday, Jan. 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Wednesday, March 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
